Family: Magnoliaceae

10 Fresh Seeds

Swamp magnolia, also known as SweetBay magnolia, is native to the coastal and swampy areas.

Zones : 5-10

This Magnolia has shiny, evergreen leaves and summer flowers are similar to those of southern magnolia (M. grandiflora), but its form is less broad and its branching looser.

Swamp Magnolia's height depends on a few factors, the greatest of which is climate. It can reach 30 - 90 Feet Tall - 10 to 35 feet wide

Sun to Partial Shade and Soil moisture also has a role in plant height.

All parts of the Sweet Bay Magnolia are fragrant. The roots, branches and leaves smell sweet and spicy, a bit like vanilla. The lovely creamy flowers layer in a hint of lemon. Sweet Bay Magnolia flowers perfume your entire yard for many weeks in spring and summer.

Plant Magnolia Seeds:

These are Fresh Seeds.

Scrub magnolia seeds with a paper towel to remove the red pulpy coating. If the seed coat doesn’t come off, try soaking the seeds in water overnight to soften them.

Growing magnolias from seed is a practice of patience – not only will you need to wait a few months to see signs of sprouting, but the seedlings may take as long as 15 years to bloom! It is worth waiting for..

When temperatures reach around 70° F in the spring, plant your magnolia seeds either in the ground or in pots, about 1/2″ deep in a light planting medium. Keep evenly moist until the seeds germinate, which usually takes a few weeks or longer.

Transplant seedlings to their permanent homes, or grow them in pots until they’re a little bigger. Keep the seedlings evenly moist and protected from direct sun for the first year.
