25 Fresh Organic Yaupon Holly Seeds

From: South East Texas

Name – Ilex Vomitoria

Family: Ilex (Holly) - Scrub \ Tree - You can trim it to your desired look.

Type: Evergreen shrub

Sowing: The outer flesh can be removed before planting. Sow the seeds immediately after gathering them, because they germinate most reliably when fresh. ( Most do not make others aware of this process for best germination of the seeds )
++++These are freshly picked.++++

Fill a 4-inch plastic pot with a mixture of half loam and half perlite. Fill one pot for each yaupon seed. Leave the top 1/4 inch of each pot empty. Firm the soil slightly but do not press it too hard.

Sow one yaupon seed in each pot at a depth equal to four times the width of the seed, which is approximately 1/4 inch. Cover the seeds with loam and spread a thin layer of coarse sand over the surface.

Mist the potting mixture with water until it feels moist in the top inch. Maintain light moisture in the loam,but allow the surface to dry out before watering again. Use a spray bottle to water. You do not want to dislodge the seeds.

Cover the pots loosely with plastic wrap. Keep the seeds under warm conditions for one to two months, which helps break their dormancy.

Move the pots inside the refrigerator or outdoors against a shaded, north-facing wall to cold stratify after the warming period has ended. Leave them under cold conditions for two to three months.

Move the pots to a sheltered, partially shaded position outdoors once the cold stratification period has ended. Remove the plastic wrap. Continue to water regularly while the seeds germinate.

Germination will be in spring once daytime temperatures is above 68 F for a period of time. Grow under partial shade for the first summer & full sun during their first winter. Move them into the garden in spring.
